Poem #5

the light wind blows through my hair

the sunset in the background is all I see

until you call my name

as if breaking from a trance

I have been in all my life

I see you at last

and though I want to ask where have you been

no words leave my heart

just tears of happiness

or maybe fragments of the past pain

I would never know

just that you are here, now

and I couldn’t wish for anything more!

  1. A trance at the beginning and then the tears towards the end make for an effective contrast; the trance makes everything a bit surreal, yet tears always seem to me to make everything concrete. I like the journey that connects the two experiences. How poignant that you want to ask where the other has been, yet how normal to just accept the happiness of having that person near.

  2. This so describes what I’ve felt for the past month, having my 90 yr old mother visiting with me, yet constantly distracted by smartphone messaging and calls from friends, family, and news reports. Yes, the happiness of having her near enough to hug and touch.
