Hour 22: Villanelle – Summer Nights

Villanelle – Summer Nights

I dress the trees behind me

in layers, just like leaves

as the cold summer nights still freeze.

I can feel in the morning a gentle breeze

caress my tired eyes with a loving kiss

as I dress the trees behind me.

In Winter these bare bones hold no leaves;

in Autumn leaves fall like the stars we wish

upon my shoulders the cold Summer nights still freeze.

But in Spring, once more, I do as I please;

the hardest thing to do is to forgive

as I dress the trees behind me.

In my memories of the times where we

had all the time of life left to live,

now the cold Summer nights still freeze.

And still, I walk among the barren trees

save for the spiders high among the branches weave

who have dressed the trees behind me

for the cold Summer nights still freeze.

    1. I’m really glad you liked it, I often let the poem create it’s own path as I write. When I am writing I am merely on the journey, not trying to reach the destination. =)

  1. I like the language of this poem, such as the repetition of the line “for the cold Summer nights still freeze” (which would have been such a visceral line by itself, made more powerful by the repetition). I also particularly liked the lines “in Autumn leaves fall like the stars we wish” and “save for the spiders high among the branches weave” especially since my garden is currently wreathed in spider webs. Definitely a poem that made me stop and think.

  2. “I dress the trees behind me
    in layers, just like leaves
    as the cold summer nights still freeze.”

    – Wonderful and surprising and the way the poem shifts beyond that and grows and changes, really is wonderful, and remarkably written.
