Sonnet: Restless Nights

Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
Of dreams of desire, which turn to nightmares
Of screams of fire, which turn to whimpers
Your curse is one I find hard to dispel

Your manner and form enough to compel
Of your decisions I am unaware
Of your conditions, I confess, I care
Of the final hurdle at which I fell

I am drawn to your intoxication
Your sobering effect is my desire
I fear I challenge your concentration
Your fast failure of a trial by fire

Of restless nights, which bring early mornings
Your dispelled shadow, my only warning

Poem 20 of 24, written for the 24hr ‘Poetry Marathon’ by DS Coremans

This poem was inspired by the line, “Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels” taken from the Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock by TS Eliot
