marriage is a sacrament
of love and pleasure
and aching and pain;
when you hit the windowsill
and the sky fills your brain
– hush, my love –
become soft and stay this way
like […]

WHEN U TAKE
WHAT THEY TOOK FROM U
IT WILL MAKE THEM ANGRY
THEY WILL CALL U UNFAIR FOR TAKING
THAT WHICH HAS ALWAYS BELONGED TO U
THEY WILL CALL U VIOLENT
THEY WILL CALL U UNGRATEFUL
THEY WILL […]

i would have loved to grown up a better person. this is not
a personal offense. merely an observation of the fact that
girlhood never seemed to suit me well. i was always too
loud too out there too […]

he smelled like beer
and he slurred when he spoke
he had no home to return to
he had no job to hold

one day you come home from school past the farmland past the road next to the swamp where the gators lie if you look long and hard enough and your mother stands outside waiting for you and you do not know what she […]

The caterpillar does not know good from evil,
Or life from death
The caterpillar simply lives;
Takes the day by its dawn
And keeps going until the setting sun lulls him to sleep
He knows that there […]

I met Death when I was only a young girl
His hands were very cold and his eyes were a dark blue, speckled
Like a sky full of stars on a summer night
He was on his way to Maya’s house
Where he would […]

I am at a house party
It is in a suburb I’ve not been before; it is open
And I’m pretty sure everyone who lives there is rich
I smoke a cigarette that I have lit with a lighter
bummed from a punk girl […]

there is an evil on the other side of the street – it crawls in the corners of your eyes when you sleep and it stays in the crevices between your hips every waking hour; would you do it like a child? would you go […]

Hello hello,
I’m Isabelle and when I signed up for this marathon I thought ET meant European time. Turns out…. it doesn’t. However, mama didn’t raise a quitter, so I will bravely set my alarm for 3 in the […]

Actually, I think you are good to go at noon. If you are in European time and shifting from Toronto (central time) you should be doing the marathon from noon to midnight (kind of cool!)! Please double-check in case I am wrong, but I wouldn’t want you getting up early without cause! Enjoy and have fun tomorrow!

There is a lovely tenderness in this poem. I loved:
“become soft and stay this way
like kafka”
And the story of the little mouse was wonderful!
