I place my hand upon my heart.

    There.

    To feel what is inside.

At times the beat is strong.

    Distinct, rhythmic, full.

    Or just a quiet tap

    where sadness dampens joy

to remind me that I […]

    • Heartbeats… love its pulsations.

    • Beautiful! I really loved how aptly you have described the heartbeats with the emotions we go through. And so inspiring and positive as well. Lovely!

    • Beautiful!!! This poem is so eloquent! I love your imagery and especially the different metaphors for the heart and heartbeat…”In every timber I remember”-stunning line! Well done! I hope you consider submitting this lovely poem!

    • Sorry to read of your Internet issues Lexanne. But, I am very happy to hear that yo will submit Beat…It needs to be printed, circulated and read widely! I love it!

    • No issues, Lexanne. Internet issues are a major problem these days with the world revolving around the web.

    • This is about a simple action that I wonder how many experience. Periodically I put my hand over my heart just to feelit. The poet tells us of the good reasons to do this and I think many can identify with feeling the beat.

  • I will go back

    Back to blue green water

    Warm with fishies swimming by

Smooth and silky waves swirling around me

    Maui, I will return

  • When I was a child
I was warned about “those people”
    Who had long hair
    Wore bell bottom jeans
    Lived in communes loving freely
Smoked pot (long before it was legal)
    They were called “hippies”
    They were no […]

  • There is a fable of a strange figure,
    Lit from within,
Like a firefly caught inside a bottle,
    Heat rising from her skin,
Dancing her way as lantern light
    For the weary traveler.

    I hold my flashlight […]

  • I’m officially an old fart.

I have no wish to comply.

I can hear my dad rolling his eyes from the grave,
    we are in-sync.

Instead I will make chocolate chip cookies.

    • Fabulous title, and the poem spoke so beautifully to it! Vulnerability and hope showing through your words… ‘stopping just as the rain did… she was enough’! Yes! Thank you for this poem.

  • 3:20 each morning I hear your song
The beginning of my ideal day

    As feet touch ground
Gratitude of what has been and what will be

    My clothes gather me up
And out we go, the Bean and I

    Coffee warms and […]

  • Tell me
    If the sky was covered
    In hued umbrellas
    Keeping me safe
    Away from the rain
    Could I ever
Put on my big rubber boots
    And dance
    Chancing a sprained ankle
Wet hair, a cold to put me in my […]

  • I found you spiraled around wrought iron stems.
    Reaching beyond, seeking.
    Verdant vines, luscious pink blossoms
    calling to summer acknowledging
    your presence.

Gently clipped stems here and there.
    Not to […]

  • Now a scrawny shadow cast
    where aspens once stood
spreading shade, keeping space for silken webs,
peace for birds, a corner sentry.
But this altitude too low, air too dry,

  • First, a shake
    Always a shake

    That familiar sound
    Tiny treasures sing

    My fingers pull the lid
    From the tin
    And run through

    A playground of
    Colors and hues
    Stars, flowers,

    Glassy, some dented
    Too […]
