Shhhhh, I’m reading.
There’s a world playing out in my mind,
While I sit stone-still, staring at arrangements of letters,
That give birth to whole lifetimes.
You can talk and laugh and walk around,
Isn’t that exactly how it felt? Staring at arrangements of letters? You captured the essence of how it felt at the end.
You have a creative sense of humor, shhh… 😉
Shyami – you’ve perfectly captured the stultifying sense of exhaustion that hits at the end of the marathon! I’m actually wincing as I read this as it takes me back to our mutual experiences last week. Love this!
Down the path and into sunlight,
And suddenly you are on show
To everyone already swimming.
Down the grassy path to a bank of muddy sand,
A few people at a time
Always leave their shoes, shorts, and shirts […]
Nice rhythm, alliteration, and other stuff: Sometimes slipping; sometimes swimming…rising, dripping…Some stack stones. Beautiful imagery.
Shyami – this is beautiful! It’s creates such a clear atmosphere and I’m totally caught by the phrase ‘and suddenly you are on show’ – it moves us, with the central character, out into the arena of the river with all its activities. I felt as though I was stepping through a door into this world – lovely!
Sometimes I feel we’re on a Möbius strip,
A Möbius trip
That never ends.
Now we’re on one side,
And now the other,
And it’s always surprising,
But always the same.
Please follow my example
In about fifteen percent of things.
The rest of the time, do the opposite.
I’m pretty sure you already know
Which is which.
The girl who is left wild,
As she should be,
And not tamed,
Will freely follow her Fox and her Bear,
Wherever they may lead,
For they know exactly where she needs to go.
A girl who is left wild and not […]
Nice, poetic story. 🙂
I love your repetition (with slight variations) of ‘the gir who is left wild’ for she comes across as this powerful – almost totemic – figure who can liberate others and do things that others do not dare to do. You have caught the wild beauty of her and of her approach to life: I really feel there is a story and an adventure here!
I love the tone and theme of this poem. I love the alliteration and especially like the wording of these lines:
And will walk straight into the heart
Of your decaying civilized world,” I am captivated by this imagery! Great poem!
Enjoyed this poem reflection on being wild being true to one’s heart.
I was led to the gallows
Gruffly, by indifferent men
Who’d learned not to feel.
They pushed me forward,
So that I would climb the steps.
When I reached the top,
The hangman looked into my eyes.
“How are y […]
He was people.
He was a good boy.
He started out
As a ball of fluff
Who fell asleep in my arms
While we decided which ball of fluff to take home.
There was no choice.
He was the loving one.
I sought in him comfort,
Things that were scarce
In my desert soul.
But that he held these things for me,
And kept these things for me,
Was a mirage,
Of thirst and heat and madness.
I was calling you in my mind, willing you to hear me, beseeching, in your own.
And I may never know if you felt me,
If I entered your mind unbidden, and you fanned me away like errant smoke.
I doubt I’ll ever […]
Lucky that cardiac muscle
Otherwise we’d be in trouble.
What if we forgot to make it beat?
Or just didn’t feel like it today?
Like a folded fist
Nestled beneath the ribs,
It was a quirky house,
a little problematic.
By the time we left,
The furnace was dead.
The dishwasher hadn’t worked in years.
Windows wouldn’t stay open of their own accord.
The wooded ridge behind blocked […]
Has anyone seen Dorothy?
Anyone at all?
She stood a height of five foot one to five foot four inches tall.
Her eyes were grey or blue, her hair a dark, dark brown.
She was last seen all dressed in blue in old […]
Do you have a spare breastbone?
Mine was shattered,
By the light of the moon,
Under a canopy of stars.
I drove my Jeep
To the far end of the lake
Looking for you,
Tasting the glory I would know
When our […]
I was once a soldier,
Disciplined and honorable.
But nothing prepared anyone for Viet Nam.
Now I stand all night, all day
On Massachusetts Avenue
Growling and hissing unintelligibly
At college students who […]
Holy miracle of miracles,
How do you exist?
How does sound coalesce
Laden with meaning
And all that makes our existence
Worth the effort
Of being alive?
It’s a long drop down,
(Is it long enough?)
And gravity would let me.
Wouldn’t ask if I was sure,
But would let me.
The gesture lives inside me
And I hunger for it,
For that tragic […]
I am waiting, eternity upon eternity,
For signs of your remorse.
It has to dawn on you eventually,
Because we are all expanding in our empathy.
For signs of your remorse
I grow impatient, and […]
I was somehow afraid
That I’d blow their minds,
And they’d never recover,
If I let them see.
So I hid favorite parts of myself,
Masking truth to keep them comfortable
In what they thought they […]
We wandered, stopping at a playful stream rich with minerals, and in the near distance, an ocean, grey and serious, knowing the predicament we were in. Knowing, and saying nothing. Feeling no obligation to make […]
Give me earth on hands,
Streaked on faces,
Give me soot from a cooking fire,
Give me stitching what’s been torn.
Let me move the elements of the Earth,
Which still make up this body.
We are fading away […]
