Once Upon A Knock

Once upon a knock
that came to my
door
One that I answered
before I could
implore
Who stood there
in cloak with
dagger
But the one that
we all dread that
backstabber
He promised me
life, long with
hope
But he came
tonight saying
nope
I tried shutting
the heavy front
door
But my strength
he did totally
ignore
I tried to sob
to beg and
plead
He spoke and said
this is what you and I
agreed
I shouted no
I do not
remember
His face grew
grim and long
slender
Hands began to
reach for me
then
I ran away
and prayed deep
amen
I was given a
new chance to
live
I don’t know why
I had nothing left to
give
He shut the door
with one last
glance
I knew not to
waste this
chance
