How envious I am of my dog
\nSprawling like a human
\nAcross my couch,
\nDarting like an arrow
\nStraight into the house
\nNearly knocking me down as
\nHe races past me,
\nLooking at me innocently with
\nHis tongue lolling
\nOff to the side.
\nHe groans like an old man
\nEvery time he lays down-
\nA loud \u201cHrrumph\u201d and a thud
\nAnd off to dreamland he goes.
\nHe insists on sleeping next to me
\nAt the head of my bed,
\nAbsconding with my pile of pillows
\nI just positioned for myself.
\nHe has no problem just sitting there
\nAs I yank with all my strength
\nThe small corner of blanket
\nWhen he decided to nap.
\nHe just looks at me as though
\nMy attempts to dislodge it are
\nfutile and entirely amusing
\nWhile he gives me that look with his eyes.
\nHe knows exactly which buttons to press
\nAnd talks back worse than
\nMy ten-year-old son
\nAfter an all-night Minecraft binge.
\nThe shit likes to run and won\u2019t miss
\nThe opportunity to escape
\nAnd prance around the neighborhood
\nAnd taunt me while I stand in the street
\nin my pajamas
\nno makeup
\nno shoes
\nhair a mess
\nwith my hands planted firmly
\nupon my plushy hips while
\nHolding an empty leash,
\nBut how I would miss the company
\nThe warm, fuzzy cuddles
\nThe kisses on my chin
\nThe way he\u2019d curl up and find
\nA place next to me
\nEven if he had to shrink himself
\nand bend space and time to fit.
\nMy dearest Poet, you deserve a spot
\nIn this marathon
\nFor the honor of being your best friend
\nAnd the greatest most loyal one
\nThat I could have ever had-
\nYou truly are a blessing
