{"id":101777,"date":"2021-06-27T06:10:58","date_gmt":"2021-06-27T10:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=101777"},"modified":"2021-06-27T06:10:58","modified_gmt":"2021-06-27T10:10:58","slug":"ode-dear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/ode-dear\/","title":{"rendered":"Ode, Dear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An ode by any other name would<br \/>\nStill read just as obsequious<br \/>\nAny great poet writes an epic ode<br \/>\nAny praiseworthy topic will do!<br \/>\nWordsworth commended duty &#8211;<br \/>\nPope in high praise of solitude<br \/>\nKeats was prolific at acclaiming<br \/>\nthe generally obscure; nightingales<br \/>\n(his poetry literally for the birds)<br \/>\nand his lauding of Grecian urns<br \/>\nstill spawns underpaid Greek jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Gray exalted bards while<br \/>\nShelley extolled the west wind<br \/>\nForsaking other directional breezes<br \/>\nNeruda was more the commoner<br \/>\nPraising his socks \u2013 woolen, as such<\/p>\n<p>Lacking the adrenal verve of praising<br \/>\nInanimate objects and lesser birds<br \/>\nI considered writing self-reflective<br \/>\nstanzas of indulgent commendation<br \/>\nBut my efforts were, alas, for naught<br \/>\nAs I discovered that writing an ode<br \/>\nTo ones own-self, patting thine own<br \/>\nBack as it were, puts one in need of<br \/>\nSelf-congratulatory chiropractic care<br \/>\nDue to overly climatic contortions <\/p>\n<p>In short, to assert such presumption<br \/>\nI am owed an ode is overtly odious.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u2013 Mark L.
