{"id":103084,"date":"2021-06-27T10:00:53","date_gmt":"2021-06-27T14:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=103084"},"modified":"2021-06-27T10:01:03","modified_gmt":"2021-06-27T14:01:03","slug":"joy-and-sorrow-in-one-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/joy-and-sorrow-in-one-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"Joy and Sorrow in One Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Joy and Sorrow in One Cup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you go to war<\/p>\n<p>And you win the battle<\/p>\n<p>And you come home triumphant<\/p>\n<p>Rejoicing that you\u2019ve won<\/p>\n<p>What d\u2019you do when you meet<\/p>\n<p>The families of those fallen at war?<\/p>\n<p>Do you suppress your joy?<\/p>\n<p>Does your sorrow now float atop?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even before you meet<\/p>\n<p>The loved ones of the fallen<\/p>\n<p>What do you think, what do you say<\/p>\n<p>About your friend, your bosom friend perhaps<\/p>\n<p>With whom you\u2019ve suddenly parted on the battle field?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joy and sorrow in one cup, but not mixing<\/p>\n<p>And none floating on the other.<\/p>\n<p>The last time a mystery as such surfaced<\/p>\n<p>It was at the Sea of Reeds<\/p>\n<p>But the standing water, even then,<\/p>\n<p>Gave clear joy to the beneficiaries of the stand<\/p>\n<p>They had clear joy indeed &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>No mixing, no floating, and no sorrow beside<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When a child gets to high places<\/p>\n<p>The mother rejoices, the father celebrates<\/p>\n<p>But what if the child brings shame and sorrow<\/p>\n<p>By acting like a total buffoon<\/p>\n<p>In manners, in society, and at home perhaps?<\/p>\n<p>Do the parents rejoice still? Do they occasionally blame themselves?<\/p>\n<p>Does one blame the other<\/p>\n<p>That a child so loved is devoid of humanity?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s joy in an aspect of the child\u2019s success<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s sorrow in another, and it\u2019s glaring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joy and sorrow<\/p>\n<p>In a cup we carry<\/p>\n<p>Many times in life<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joy and Sorrow in One Cup When you go to war And you win the battle And you come home triumphant Rejoicing that you\u2019ve won What d\u2019you do when you meet The families of those fallen at war?
