Peace Pirate Poetry May 2022 Prompt Responses:<\/p>\n
If you know you’re going to be late,<\/p>\n
too late for the showing, or so late that<\/p>\n
even the ice in my water will have melted<\/p>\n
before we’re able to order, then I hope<\/p>\n
you know<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
you will be crafted into a work of art.<\/p>\n
You will be immortal as a poem and<\/p>\n
most likely you will outlive every other<\/p>\n
thing I’ve created. Because there will be<\/p>\n
love and hate broiled into every word<\/p>\n
to hit the page so completely that<\/p>\n
you will be my most quoted creation.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It does not matter if we have been<\/p>\n
on dates before, or if this is the first.<\/p>\n
It does not matter if you have lived<\/p>\n
in my home with me or not, because<\/p>\n
poetry is the only consistent home<\/p>\n
I have ever known – and to welcome<\/p>\n
you within these pages is indeed<\/p>\n
wonderous and rare – it does not<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
account for tardiness. And I will<\/p>\n
not stand for such flippant responses<\/p>\n
to our love. Our life. Or my time.<\/p>\n

2. Perfect Pair<\/p>\n
I have a “pair” of sneakers<\/p>\n
that is composed of one<\/p>\n
black sneaker and one white sneaker.<\/p>\n
They are covered in sharpie dreams<\/p>\n
of lyrics and dreams and people we<\/p>\n
have always wanted to be – but will<\/p>\n
never know how to walk the path<\/p>\n
of becoming. These are my favorite<\/p>\n
shoes, because everyone always<\/p>\n
has something to say. Has something<\/p>\n
to wonder. Has to take a photo of.<\/p>\n
And I would not it any other way.<\/p>\n

3. Company:<\/p>\n
Darling, you have always been such beautiful company.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Carrying words in your heart and art on your skin.<\/p>\n
Filling every room we venture into with laughter.<\/p>\n
Standing tall no matter the storm raging around.<\/p>\n
Existing blissfully – just knowing that you are mine<\/p>\n
& I am yours.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This friendship, I believe, is the epitome of<\/p>\n
everything that the world has tried to keep us<\/p>\n
from being, and living, and understanding.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Thus, we shall carry on as we have for all of time.<\/p>\n
Despite the distance ever dancing between us.<\/p>\n

4. May the Force:<\/p>\n
If you have a hobby, a fantasy world, a memory<\/p>\n
that you embrace so whole-heartedly that it<\/p>\n
appears in every big momentous occasion you live,<\/p>\n
then I shall support you and the artistry of such things.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But you must know, Star Wars has never been<\/p>\n
and likely never will be a favorite of mine for any<\/p>\n
reason other than the place it holds in YOUR heart.<\/p>\n

5. For Now:<\/p>\n
For now, I will breathe<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
and pretend that everything is okay.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But I want you to know my lungs<\/p>\n
will be the first thing to give out on me.<\/p>\n
And when that happens, I’ll likely lose<\/p>\n
the ability to raise this voice of mine<\/p>\n
in crowded rooms and empty coffee shops alike.<\/p>\n
And if that happens, the artistry flowing through me,<\/p>\n
coursing through these veins and bleeding itself<\/p>\n
onto pages that will be photographed but<\/p>\n
never held – will carry on until my heart<\/p>\n
beats its final measure. I’ll simply rely on you<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
to do the talking. Which may seem odd<\/p>\n
at first, but I promise, you’ll find<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
it’s just like breathing.<\/p>\n

6. People Watching:<\/p>\n
Walk into any cafe, bar, restaurant you like<\/p>\n
order the first thing on the menu that catches your eye –<\/p>\n
even if you have no idea what it is. Find a seat outside<\/p>\n
of the incoming sunlight, the center of the room, or<\/p>\n
by the register – I know this can be difficult, but I<\/p>\n
have faith in you. Take out a book, pretend that you<\/p>\n
are reading every word stamped onto the page<\/p>\n
as intently as you stare into your first love’s gazes.<\/p>\n
Know that you are really tasked with people watching.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
With exploring the way the building sways in the wind<\/p>\n
and how people dance around each other and the words<\/p>\n
that get carried across the steam rising from the coffee you<\/p>\n
know you’ll need. With being a part of everything and nothing<\/p>\n
all at once – because someday the world will need to know<\/p>\n
the goings on of places like this in times like these and you<\/p>\n
are the greatest artist I have ever known. This task is yours.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And I only hope you will continue to appreciate such findings<\/p>\n
as the times and places continue to change – and so do you.<\/p>\n

7. Cat Eyes:<\/p>\n
SKIP – because this would be more of a gut reaction rant rather than an actual poem<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
8. Wizard’s Staff:<\/p>\n
My friend, I know, I know with<\/p>\n
every<\/p>\n
single<\/p>\n
fiber of my being, that you<\/p>\n
are certainly going to be part<\/p>\n
of the creation of a fabulously<\/p>\n
powerful human being in a<\/p>\n
multitude of beautiful ways.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But you cannot under<\/p>\n
absolutely<\/p>\n
any<\/p>\n
circumstances name your child<\/p>\n
Bathazar or Gwenevier or after<\/p>\n
any of the characters you’ve<\/p>\n
built within fictional lands.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There is a difference between<\/p>\n
a wizard’s staff as an artifact or<\/p>\n
decoration and actually believing<\/p>\n
that you are chaotic enough to<\/p>\n
BE a wizard or a warlock or a<\/p>\n
demon master in this day and age.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And no matter how ridiculously<\/p>\n
amazing your child will indeed be,<\/p>\n
you cannot ask them to live through<\/p>\n
the taunting and the teasing and the<\/p>\n
madness that will undoubtedly follow<\/p>\n
them through the hardest years of<\/p>\n
their life with a name like that – a<\/p>\n
standard to live up to that simply<\/p>\n
no youth should be asked to.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It would be like giving birth to a<\/p>\n
Shakespeare and demanding them<\/p>\n
be the next Currie. It cannot and<\/p>\n
should not be done regardless of<\/p>\n
how confident you may be upon<\/p>\n
the day of their birth. I do wish you<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
every possible happiness though.<\/p>\n

9. One Hand Song<\/p>\n
In your arms you carry every meaningful<\/p>\n
moment you have ever encountered.<\/p>\n
Songs and poems and stories and toys<\/p>\n
and memories and dreams and dances.<\/p>\n
Some would say you are overburdened<\/p>\n
that you must let go of the resources<\/p>\n
in order to carry new ones – I say<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I trust you. And in my eyes, if you<\/p>\n
trust yourself that is more than enough<\/p>\n
to counteract what ANY of us may believe.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But, you have a one hand song<\/p>\n
taking up so much space that<\/p>\n
could be utilized in other ways –<\/p>\n
if only you could understand that<\/p>\n
music is just as much a soulful<\/p>\n
experience as it is a tangible one.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And I know you are going to do<\/p>\n
whatever it is you think best for yourself –<\/p>\n
but I just wanted you to know that<\/p>\n
some of the things that matter do not<\/p>\n
need to be carried in such heavy ways. ‘<\/p>\n

10. Tradition:<\/p>\n
Every morning<\/p>\n
as the sun rises<\/p>\n
and the mosquitoes buzz<\/p>\n
you and I have coffee<\/p>\n
on the Veranda.<\/p>\n

Yours in a purple espresso cup<\/p>\n
mine summer yellow – because<\/p>\n
we need to start things off joyfully.<\/p>\n
Afterall we do not want to be here,<\/p>\n
these are some of the most impactful<\/p>\n
days we will ever know, and still<\/p>\n
we must move forward – making<\/p>\n
the most of what we have if we<\/p>\n
ever wish to change things.<\/p>\n

This is the most beautiful tradition<\/p>\n
either of us will ever know.<\/p>\n

11. Spell of Sparrow:<\/p>\n
While this IS a really cool prompt, it’s really just not speaking to me right now. And honestly, I hope that’s cool. Maybe if you’re reading this, it’ll speak to you though. That is always a wish I carry.<\/p>\n

12. Self Guided:<\/p>\n
The box of stickers resting patiently<\/p>\n
in the closet that has not been opened<\/p>\n
since Christmas – is too good for us.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It is a self-guided discovery of its own<\/p>\n
that will someday litter the pages of<\/p>\n
our dreams and wonders and everything<\/p>\n
we were not actually able to become<\/p>\n
within the confines of this lifetime.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And it is a beautiful and terrible thing<\/p>\n
all at once to know that a person’s fate<\/p>\n
and entire story can both be told and<\/p>\n
detailed in a handful of misc. stickers.<\/p>\n

13. Reconcile:<\/p>\n
To reconcile the halves of myself<\/p>\n
that remain unnamed despite the<\/p>\n
importance of such things would<\/p>\n
be just as tiresome as telling two<\/p>\n
neighbor boys they have to be friend –<\/p>\n
and in the world today also expecting<\/p>\n
them to eventually be lovers.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And proud of who and what they are<\/p>\n
and vocal about the story they’ve written<\/p>\n
both together and as individuals. You<\/p>\n
cannot simply expect someone or something<\/p>\n
to grow into the shapes you could not<\/p>\n
just by believing it so. And I will not and<\/p>\n
by no means will ever try to explain<\/p>\n
my own reasons to the parts of myself<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
that refuse to listen or change.<\/p>\n
I will simply exist in the ways that feel<\/p>\n
best and most important to the person I am.<\/p>\n

14. Hippie Names:<\/p>\n
My mother wears burkenstocks<\/p>\n
and I like paisely and raves –<\/p>\n
interchangeably everything you<\/p>\n
just read makes sense regardless<\/p>\n
of the order you read it in.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Because of this, people in our lives<\/p>\n
call us hippie names and refuse to<\/p>\n
believe that we can actually function<\/p>\n
as adult people in the society we were<\/p>\n
born into. And though things have<\/p>\n
changed over the years, there is<\/p>\n
absolutely nothing wrong now or then<\/p>\n
with hippies, or the people we have become.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Despite whatever the world around us<\/p>\n
chooses to believe at any given time.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And such things will remain true for even<\/p>\n
the furthest of generations yet to come.<\/p>\n

Okay so it’s 11 pm for me – I’ve been up since 6 – and was not *exactly* planning to prep for the event today, but I am. I’ve got 9 minutes left of my one hour timer, and I’ve written 12 poems and racked up 1600+ words. If I can properly sleep, eat and caffinate prior to the real deal – I think I’ve got this under control. HOWEVER, since writing my introduction I’ve decided to alter my pledge – I will donate $5 to charity for every hour I successfully write more than 3 poems. Because taking care of yourself is first, within reason, and encouraging a community is almost always secondary. Let’s see how many more poems can be written in the remaining few minutes shall we?<\/p>\n

15: More hope:<\/p>\n
The world always needs<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
more hope;<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
and to be honest, so do<\/p>\n
most of us<\/p>\n
on a more personal level.<\/p>\n

This is why poetry deserves<\/p>\n
every goddamn award known to man.<\/p>\n
Why artistry is the most important<\/p>\n
task any soul can be assigned.<\/p>\n
And precisely why the starving artist<\/p>\n
belief is a complete and utter myth.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Even if we do not have money<\/p>\n
in the bank – we are rich with<\/p>\n
the wealth of encouraging ourselves<\/p>\n
and others no matter what life<\/p>\n
sends our way. And that is<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
more than any prized possession<\/p>\n
could ever offer, create, or understand.<\/p>\n
