The man was smoldering in the ditch<\/p>\n
they had tried to put him out<\/p>\n
he was a charcoal lump covered in white foam.<\/p>\n

When they tried to get him in the bag<\/p>\n
his skin sloughed off like that of baked chicken<\/p>\n
and his half-skull head lolled.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
His car was a desiccated metal husk<\/p>\n
like what a robot insect might leave behind<\/p>\n
folded into itself against a tree.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In the car next to me<\/p>\n
a mother in vain<\/p>\n
tried to stop her son from looking.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Her hand grazed his cheek<\/p>\n
as she reached behind her seat<\/p>\n
to cover his curious little eyes.<\/p>\n

I looked at him<\/p>\n
and gave a weak smile<\/p>\n
wondering about the trauma he might face later.<\/p>\n

He looked at me blankly,<\/p>\n
then titled his head back<\/p>\n
and pressed his open nostrils to the glass.<\/p>\n
