I try to remember<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>your words: sideways mouth,<\/p>\n<p>rage erupting in whirlpools.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, all that remains<\/p>\n<p>are your eyes and an empty coffeepot.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar sizzle: hiss of water,<\/p>\n<p>steady drip towards wakefulness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wonder where you are now,<\/p>\n<p>two time zones ahead, stirring<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>in your own small bed. That photo<\/p>\n<p>of you and your lover, his hands<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>protecting your shoulders. The book<\/p>\n<p>of poems you sent me. My final<\/p>\n<p>glimpse of you, face half-covered<\/p>\n<p>in a surgical mask, pushing it aside<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>between sips of beer. Why have we<\/p>\n<p>allowed thirty years to be trampled<\/p>\n<p>underfoot? It wasn\u2019t me,<\/p>\n<p>or even you.
