I\u2019m only with him on the good days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The days I swim across the chasm\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Filled with well-intentioned promises<\/span><\/p>\n

That never carried us forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I choose forgiveness over defiance,<\/span><\/p>\n

Unzip my bulletproof vest and<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrender myself for a moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I let myself be lulled into complacency,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Soothed by his temporary warmth while<\/span><\/p>\n

We sit under a fickle sun<\/span><\/p>\n

Both of us keeping our eyes on\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The not-so-distant storm.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We know the respite is short,<\/span><\/p>\n

The bitter reality of addiction<\/span><\/p>\n

Billowing back in stronger each time.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our safe harbor grows smaller.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How many more times can my body<\/span><\/p>\n

Carry me across this distance to him<\/span><\/p>\n

Until he must meet me halfway<\/span><\/p>\n

Or not at all?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Am I worthy of that distance?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I will be lost in the deluge of\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Broken promises and half-truths,<\/span><\/p>\n

Calling his name until it\u2019s only<\/span><\/p>\n
