My bare head<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>sailed through updrafts<\/p>\n<p>as I encircled the middle school<\/p>\n<p>parking lot, for no reason<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>except it was there. Injury<\/p>\n<p>happened to other people,<\/p>\n<p>but I never gave it much thought.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Later, my own son, swaddled<\/p>\n<p>in knee and elbow pads,<\/p>\n<p>head encased in a sturdy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>fiberglass helmet, wobbled<\/p>\n<p>down the sidewalk for half a block,<\/p>\n<p>then proclaimed he didn\u2019t care<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>if he ever rode a bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>After thirty-two years,<\/p>\n<p>he still doesn\u2019t know how.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Safety First &nbsp; Before helmets existed, I rode my bike dozens of miles to the pool, tennis courts, and library.
