{"id":108565,"date":"2022-06-25T12:16:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-25T16:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=108565"},"modified":"2022-06-25T12:16:38","modified_gmt":"2022-06-25T16:16:38","slug":"does-nature-take-sides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/does-nature-take-sides\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Nature Take Sides?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes the unfortunates<br \/>\nhave the finest views,<br \/>\nclouds rolling in a distant valley,<br \/>\na hawk swooping down on green meadow,<br \/>\nthe rich man gazing out on rooftops<br \/>\nand opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t nature who decides<br \/>\nwho lives in the wild,<br \/>\nwho lives in the penthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Chance and weather conditions<br \/>\nmay choose the tornados path,<br \/>\nbut humans build their homes<br \/>\non fault lines.<\/p>\n<p>In Afghanistan, a 6.1 earthquake.<br \/>\nMudslides bury the living and the dead.<\/p>\n<p>In Oklahomaa, a 5.8 temblor<br \/>\ntumbled chimneys,<br \/>\nloosened ceiling tiles in classrooms,<br \/>\nshut down businesses for repairs,<br \/>\ncracked my tile floor.<br \/>\nNo one died.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t nature, but circumstances. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s your lot in life<br \/>\nto live in your own space, among old trees.<br \/>\nMaybe you&#8217;re in a refugee camp,<br \/>\ndependent of the kindness of strangers<br \/>\nand the whims of an autocrat.<\/p>\n<p>Nature is ruthless,<br \/>\nbut she can&#8217;t take all the blame<br \/>\nfor human choices,<br \/>\nfor economic circumstances,<br \/>\nfor the damage the powerful can wreak<br \/>\non the powerless.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes the unfortunates have the finest views, clouds rolling in a distant valley, a hawk swooping down on green meadow, the rich man gazing out on rooftops and opportunities.
