Does one walk uphill to get to the beach?<\/p>\n
I, dimwitted, did indeed<\/p>\n
searching for Red Sand Beach at Hana<\/p>\n
Up and up on a wooded cinder cone<\/p>\n
through tall grasses looking for an elusive trail<\/p>\n
past neglected gravestones with Chinese lettering<\/p>\n
made of sea-worn basalt<\/p>\n
rounded, standing like fat fingers<\/p>\n
on the slope<\/p>\n
Eventually one comes to the edge<\/p>\n
of the forgotten cemetery<\/p>\n
where erosion drops teetering headstones<\/p>\n
down to the sea<\/p>\n
a shoreline littered with fallen monuments<\/p>\n
And there it was<\/p>\n
the trail<\/p>\n
far below<\/p>\n
All I needed was to recall gravity<\/p>\n
the force that draws gravestones down<\/p>\n
and keeps water from flying<\/p>\n
and helps hikers to descend to where<\/p>\n
beaches can be found<\/p>\n
