{"id":109550,"date":"2022-06-25T12:35:32","date_gmt":"2022-06-25T16:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=109550"},"modified":"2022-06-25T12:37:57","modified_gmt":"2022-06-25T16:37:57","slug":"hour-four-the-crystal-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/hour-four-the-crystal-set\/","title":{"rendered":"Hour Four &#8211; The Crystal Set"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Crystal Set<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want a try?\u201d<br \/>\nmy brother says<br \/>\nlifting the headphones from his own ears<br \/>\nand placing them on mine<\/p>\n<p>At first, I hear nothing<br \/>\nbut my brother scratches the wire<br \/>\nacross the crystal<br \/>\nand the sound of stringed instruments<br \/>\nfills my head<br \/>\nAstonishing! <\/p>\n<p>Then, a voice<br \/>\nalmost lost amid the static at first<br \/>\nthen louder<br \/>\nand clearer<\/p>\n<p>I am too stunned to pay attention to the words<br \/>\nthe sound of a man\u2019s voice<br \/>\na man not in this room<br \/>\nnor even in this house<br \/>\nbut as clear as if it was!<\/p>\n<p>Two miracles:<br \/>\nfirst, that it could be done<br \/>\nand second, that my brother<br \/>\njust six years old<br \/>\ncould have brought this miracle to me.<\/p>\n<p>*<br \/>\n*<br \/>\n*<br \/>\n*<br \/>\n*<\/p>\n<p>note &#8211; A crystal set was an early radio, usually homemade, that was popular in the 1920s. In 1922, President Harding brought the first radio into the White House, and many US radio stations went on the air for the first time.
