It\u2019s instinct, at least I think it is.
\nYou scratch my ear, and please do
\nand often; I tilt my head, my eyes
\nglass over, and I moan that same moan
\nas when you give me that big cow leg
\nfilled with peanut butter \u2013<\/p>\n
and that\u2019s not even the Houdini part.<\/p>\n
No, but then, when you stop,
\nI insist on sniffing your scratching finger.
\nNo one told me to do this, it\u2019s not listed
\nin the Dog to Human User Guide, apparently
\nnot something posted on facebook or twitter
\nor insta-whatever, I just know to do this.
\nI have to do this and you have to let me.<\/p>\n
So long as you know you have to scratch
\nmy ears, and no cheating by doing just one,
\nboth, please, and then right away, I have to
\nsniff your finger, your knuckle, your whole
\nhand because I have to know what\u2019s going on
\nin there. Curiosity takes over, are there crops
\nof onions or potatoes, oh, maybe seedlings
\nfor tennis ball trees? Ok, groan. What,
\na build-up of wax and how did it get there?<\/p>\n
No x-rays; no cat scan, no felines allowed;
\nno lab results although Rover is part-lab
\nand he\u2019s ok but even he can\u2019t describe what
\nthe inside of my ears smell like. I need to know.
\nI hypnotize you to do your scratching duty,
\nI\u2019m mesmerized by the ecstasy of it and then
\npresto \u2013 let me sniff the scratch. Ok, want me
