An evening with you
\nWhere we can share
\nMy favorite white wine
\nWith a faint scent of oak
\nIf the proper wine glass
\nIs given room to breathe
\nAnd your favorite yellow cheddar cheese
\nSince I\u2019ve known you
\nYou\u2019ve always loved
\nYellow cheese
\nI think you have a thing for yellow
\nThough you never mention yellow
\nAs your favorite color
\nMaybe yellow just goes with your smile
\nI noticed you have changed your nail polish
\nYou used to be so careful to use either clear or pink
\nBut now you have decided
\nTo use the yellow of sunflower
\nI guess to match your slice of cheese
\nAs you lift it delicately
\nWe have a few glasses
\nThe space between us
\nFilled with silence narrows
\nBefore we ate we spoke about our days
\nAnd how hard it has become to beat the pavement
\nYou reminisced about how your mother
\nWould spend the night
\nWatching tv and knitting
\nBut you and I are beyond that
\nNow that we have settled in
\nAnd put the day behind us
\nWe have no need
\nIn our dialogue for words
\nWe communicate
\nAs all lovers do
\nWithout the need for verbal communication
\nWe use our other senses
\nOur defenses our so far down
\nThat any disturbance
\nWill destroy the fragility of existence
\nIn this moment
\nWe can talk later
\nAbout sunflowers
\nAnd the yellow roses
\nI bought for you
