It has taken most<br \/>\nof the afternoon, and as the sun<br \/>\nbegins to set, it stops<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is it resting?&#8221; I wonder to myself,<br \/>\nthen I see it shiver and crack<\/p>\n<p>And slowly, painfully, it<br \/>\nemerges &#8211; wings wet and<br \/>\nfurled, shell soft and white<\/p>\n<p>Ever so slowly, wings unroll<br \/>\ncarapace hardens and<br \/>\nbecomes glittering green<\/p>\n<p>Until, as the stars rise above,<br \/>\nit spreads its wings and flies away<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Godspeed, little friend,&#8221; I whisper,<br \/>\nas I finish packing the last box<br \/>\nof my past and prepare to rest<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, I begin a new life<br \/>\nwithout you in it<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cicada nymph slowly climbs along the branch, inch by laborious inch.
