{"id":111052,"date":"2022-06-25T14:18:26","date_gmt":"2022-06-25T18:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=111052"},"modified":"2022-06-25T14:18:26","modified_gmt":"2022-06-25T18:18:26","slug":"umbilicus-poem-5-of-12-half-marathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/umbilicus-poem-5-of-12-half-marathon\/","title":{"rendered":"Umbilicus (poem 5 of 12, half marathon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dark hole,<br \/>\nfleshy drain,<br \/>\nonce vital passage<br \/>\ndesigned to receive, cut<br \/>\nthen clamped<br \/>\nthe pipeline turned<br \/>\nan angry purple,<br \/>\nthen fell off.<\/p>\n<p>The opening<br \/>\ncapped with a whirl<br \/>\nof skin<br \/>\nnow collects lint<br \/>\nand dirt in its folds.<\/p>\n<p>Pick at the grit,<br \/>\nthe skin breaks easily<br \/>\nbut no blood,<br \/>\njust clear fluid<br \/>\nthat turns crisp<br \/>\nlike dried snot<br \/>\nor plasma.<\/p>\n<p>The spot<br \/>\nWhere I was once<br \/>\ntied me to<br \/>\nmother,<br \/>\na place for taking<br \/>\nthe blood from her<br \/>\nbody, the breath<br \/>\nfrom her lungs<br \/>\na straw sucking<br \/>\nat her,<br \/>\nmaybe that\u2019s why<br \/>\nshe left.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the fleshy cap,<br \/>\nliver and bladder<br \/>\nfiltered waste.<br \/>\nIn some bodies, the<br \/>\nvestigial artery<br \/>\ndoesn\u2019t properly<br \/>\nshut, warm piss can<br \/>\nseep out of the pit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dark hole, fleshy drain, once vital passage designed to receive, cut then clamped the pipeline turned an angry purple, then fell off.
