Ryan wants to detour to Septimus Hill
\nWhere there\u2019s a lookout overlooking
\nHalf the plains to the sea
\nBeen arguing about it for hours<\/p>\n
He wants to get a lie of the land
\n<\/i>Like he imagines himself a kind of General
\nHis words: foolish, a nonsensical notion
\nBut since he\u2019s driving we do regardless<\/p>\n
I worry we\u2019ll be too exposed on bare rock
\nWhy take any additional unnecessary risk?
\nBut we do. Park partway up the hill
\nWhile there is still tree cover of a kind<\/p>\n
& hike. Twenty minutes of thigh-crunching
\nSlog! The did I get so unfit? I play netball.
\nI run. But right now I burn. Whereas my oddball
\nIronman has barely cracked a sweat.<\/p>\n
Finally arrive at the summit & wish I had water
\nA couch, & a masseuse who knows acupuncture
\nAmazed just how much dust there is
\nBetween here & the blurred horizon<\/p>\n
& for the first time \u2014 I realise \u2014 how quiet
\nNo insects, very few almost hesitant birdcalls
\n(no song) & no sign of movement on any roads
\nIn any paddock in any direction<\/p>\n
The stillness is sublime. Until we see a car
\nSlowly trundling along a distant road.
\nAlmost instantly a drone roars in from the south
\nTwo quick bolts of light & the car\u2019s smoking.<\/p>\n
The sonic boom hits us a few seconds later.
