Family Dinner Time (Poetry Marathon 2022 – Hour 9)<\/p>\n
My mother used to keep spaghetti
\nWarm on a hot plate heated by a candle
\nShe\u2019d mix in the sauce and mix it in a bowl
\nAnd place the bowl in the frame
\nAnd then light the candle
\nWe ate dinner as a family
\nWe listened to the news on the radio as we ate
\nEvery night was a meal designated for that night
\nOne night was meat night and it could be beef
\nOr lamb or whatever my parents could afford
\nAnother night was chicken a la king night
\nWhere we ate chicken in goop
\nOn either white bread or rice
\nAnother night was spaghetti night
\nMy father used to mash his peas into
\nHis potatoes as he didn\u2019t really like peas
\nHe was not big into vegetables
\nThough his parents used to own a fruit
\nAnd vegetable store
\nHe taught his father that tomatoes
\nWere fruits not vegetables
\nI\u2019ve learned since then that there are
\nMany what we call vegetables that are really fruits
\nMy mother did her best to cook dinner
\nMy father usually made breakfast
\nAnd his trick was that he would cook the eggs
\nUsing the toaster timer
\nSo the eggs would be ready at the same time as the toast
\nMy parents did not really like food very much
\nThey had no curiosity about food
\nAnd would not eat anything they were unfamiliar with
\nBut my mother had this contraption
\nThat was a kind of hot plate
\nThat she used to keep the spaghetti warm
\nHeated by a candle
\nAfter she put the sauce in, whatever sauce was on sale that week.
\nMy father hated it and would yell at me
\nIf I had changed the station on the radio
\nIn the kitchen
\nAnd didn\u2019t change it back
\nAs he was not very good at tuning the radio
\nThat was before the radios were push button.
