{"id":114187,"date":"2022-06-25T18:05:03","date_gmt":"2022-06-25T22:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=114187"},"modified":"2022-06-25T19:51:38","modified_gmt":"2022-06-25T23:51:38","slug":"hour-nine-soda-bread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/hour-nine-soda-bread\/","title":{"rendered":"Hour Nine: Soda Bread"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Hour Nine: Soda Bread<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I keep the recipe tucked into a cookbook<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a cookbook I rarely use, of old Irish recipes.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This recipe is written<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in ballpoint blue ink, just beginning to fade,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on a 5&#215;7 sheet of unlined paper,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">paper I recognize as the pad she always used,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kept stored in the kitchen drawer<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where pencils, scissors, thimbles,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">other odds and ends were tossed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A fresh loaf of soda bread was always on the table,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">one of our staples.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was served to guests.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was a late night snack,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a dessert with milky tea,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a quick breakfast with coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her recipe is not very precise:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1 \u00bd cups of buttermilk, or a cup of milk and \u00bd cup of sour cream,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or a cup of sour cream and some milk, or whatever you have on hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As many raisins as you like. Maybe a full box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bake for an hour or so.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be sure to cover with tin foil so the top doesn\u2019t burn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She scrawled it quickly for me,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when I asked her to write it down.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She\u2019d learned it from her mother,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but I hadn\u2019t quite learned it from her,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and I wanted to make it for a St. Patrick\u2019s Day gathering<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And now she\u2019s no longer there to answer the phone,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to repeat directions, to correct my errors.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But I have her words, inscribed on the page,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and I can hear her soft voice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as I follow her steps,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">measuring and mixing and kneading just slightly.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every slice of that bread,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">filled with raisins and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dripping with butter<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tastes like a visit back home<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and I\u2019m back at the kitchen table<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with Mom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLook in your cupboards and find a food that brings up a childhood memory, and the memory is your prompt\u201d \u2013 contributed by <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/d-sqrd.com\/graphics\/?fbclid=IwAR006Ebh7Tu8hI20eM892z3Cmd-NuWZGICoTj8vXNDzrHv6O4tnCaMIhZ_k\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deborah Dalton<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hour Nine: Soda Bread I keep the recipe tucked into a cookbook a cookbook I rarely use, of old Irish recipes.
