We call her Mama Squirrel
\nbecause all these little babies
\nwe know came from her<\/p>\n
Every night we sit out
\nwait for her to show
\nmangy patches and swollen eye<\/p>\n
“Hey Mama” we call
\nand throw her a handful
\nof raw peanuts<\/p>\n
Some she eats
\nsome she stuffs
\nand runs<\/p>\n
Not to bury them
\nbut instead to offer
\nto her neighbortree friends<\/p>\n
Mama’s Peanut Kitchen
\nhas been running
\nfor three or so years now<\/p>\n
Feeding scraggly squirrels
\nBluejays and an occasional raccoon
\nMama don’t discriminate<\/p>\n
And when the summer comes to a close
\nand Mama checks her larder
\nshe’s none the worse <\/p>\n
