Some time ago the invitation came.<\/p>\n
“I’m going to The Reading Room, are you game?”<\/p>\n
I’m uncomfortable meeting humans face to face.<\/p>\n
Can’t we do this at your place?<\/p>\n
“What’s your worry? Your work is good,<\/p>\n
I’ve read some and I want more.”<\/p>\n
I won’t fit in. They are young and what’s that word…”woke”?<\/p>\n
Read my work aloud? Yeah, that’s a joke.<\/p>\n
My world is far removed from theirs, far from being “woke.”<\/p>\n
“My friend, it will surprise you, just how little they know<\/p>\n
about what it means to be truly “woke.”<\/p>\n
A chance to hear your heart could be the start<\/p>\n
that rescues them from their yoke.”<\/p>\n
I’ve seen first-hand the hurt of peer pressure,<\/p>\n
The desperate need to measure up.<\/p>\n
To be needed and valued by anyone who feeds their ego.<\/p>\n
If you promise to call me out on that, I’ll go.<\/p>\n
After some time, I went along.<\/p>\n
First, we listened to a writer’s song, and then<\/p>\n
He followed that with what he penned.<\/p>\n
My heart was stirred and drawn to learn<\/p>\n
What was this passion? What made them yearn.<\/p>\n
To have their words heard.<\/p>\n
Was it not enough to write to you?<\/p>\n
One Poet more, and then two<\/p>\n
Shared their words in voice and page.<\/p>\n
Many knew of what they spoke;<\/p>\n
Who knows, perhaps there’s more to being woke.<\/p>\n
Braved the night and soon I spoke,<\/p>\n
My words to share.<\/p>\n
No one laughed, snickered, or stared.<\/p>\n
They asked for more and so I read.<\/p>\n
