I have been bought, bride-price levied,<\/p>\n

I have been poked and prodded from the herd,<\/p>\n

and chosen worthy of the laird.<\/p>\n

I, Phylippa, have been used.<\/p>\n

My mother’s voice, veiled head bowed,<\/p>\n

whispering, “Don’t be a burden, accept.”<\/p>\n

Accept that you were chosen,<\/p>\n

accept your role and be silent.<\/p>\n

I, Phylippa, have been broken.<\/p>\n

My lip split at a hard-ringed hand,<\/p>\n

coarse laughter at my wit,<\/p>\n

His angry eyes as blood welled in my mouth.<\/p>\n

I would not stay silent.<\/p>\n

I would not accept.<\/p>\n

I, Phylippa, have been taking what’s mine.<\/p>\n

I bit his throat. I tore his eyes.<\/p>\n

I took his men and his brides.<\/p>\n

I will not accept, I will ride and fight.<\/p>\n

Curse me or bless me, do as you might,<\/p>\n
