Celebrating Juneteenth,<\/p>\n

I resurrected the djembe<\/p>\n

and<\/p>\n

marched in the light of God<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Keeping time with<\/p>\n

syncopated rhythms,<\/p>\n

we danced and<\/p>\n

we sang with hope and<\/p>\n

heavy hearts<\/p>\n

how we knew<\/p>\n

freedom was coming<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, yes,\u201d we sang,<\/p>\n

\u201cI know!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With little rhyme<\/p>\n

and less reason,<\/p>\n

We beat joy<\/p>\n

into sacred songs and the griot<\/p>\n

answered the call,<\/p>\n

Covering us<\/p>\n

in holy fire<\/p>\n

Breathing grace<\/p>\n

into our sway<\/p>\n

Giving voice<\/p>\n

to our visions<\/p>\n

Guiding us<\/p>\n

into a brighter day<\/p>\n

Echoes of bravado<\/p>\n

for fierceness —<\/p>\n

Empty and hollow music<\/p>\n

filling up<\/p>\n

the emptiness<\/p>\n

inside<\/p>\n
