Idun and Bragi<\/p>\n
In the Old Norse mythology of my ancestors,
\nIdun holds as high a place of importance as any,
\nthough few people now know why.
\nShe both owned and dispensed the fruits
\nthat imparted immortality to the gods of Asgard.
\nWithout Idun, the gods would no longer sustain
\nnever ending life and power.<\/p>\n
How appropriate, then, that she was also the wife
\nof Bragi, court poet and minstrel who chronicled
\nthe lives of the gods. For the Norse,
\nwriting also imparted a form of immortality.
\nTheir Viking descendants were known to leave
\nancient graffiti, secret carvings depicting
\ntheir runic names in places that might never be seen.<\/p>\n
A Viking father of long ago inscribed a standing
\nstone with spiraling runes describing the life
\nof his deceased son and his valiant death in battle
\nin the hope that by so doing, his son might never
\nactually die. We speak of him still, and so still he lives.
\nAnd now here I sit, a sister to Idun and Bragi, scribbling my name,
