{"id":117515,"date":"2022-06-25T22:58:09","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T02:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=117515"},"modified":"2022-06-27T08:13:07","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T12:13:07","slug":"idun-hour-fourteen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/idun-hour-fourteen\/","title":{"rendered":"Idun and Bragi, Hour Fourteen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Idun and Bragi<\/p>\n<p>In the Old Norse mythology of my ancestors,<br \/>\nIdun holds as high a place of importance as any,<br \/>\nthough few people now know why.<br \/>\nShe both owned and dispensed the fruits<br \/>\nthat imparted immortality to the gods of Asgard.<br \/>\nWithout Idun, the gods would no longer sustain<br \/>\nnever ending life and power.<\/p>\n<p>How appropriate, then, that she was also the wife<br \/>\nof Bragi, court poet and minstrel who chronicled<br \/>\nthe lives of the gods. For the Norse,<br \/>\nwriting also imparted a form of immortality.<br \/>\nTheir Viking descendants were known to leave<br \/>\nancient graffiti, secret carvings depicting<br \/>\ntheir runic names in places that might never be seen.<\/p>\n<p>A Viking father of long ago inscribed a standing<br \/>\nstone with spiraling runes describing the life<br \/>\nof his deceased son and his valiant death in battle<br \/>\nin the hope that by so doing, his son might never<br \/>\nactually die.
