{"id":117580,"date":"2022-06-25T22:56:17","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T02:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=117580"},"modified":"2022-06-25T22:56:17","modified_gmt":"2022-06-26T02:56:17","slug":"the-truthful-cow-a-folktale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/the-truthful-cow-a-folktale\/","title":{"rendered":"The Truthful Cow (a folktale)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   The Truthful Cow<\/p>\n<p>Punyakoti, the cow, was so truthful, she never lied,<br \/>\nShe had had a little calf whom she idolized.<br \/>\nHer herd lived happily in the farmer&#8217;s care.<\/p>\n<p>Once after grazing for a day in the forest<br \/>\nThe cows were going home to be milked and to rest.<br \/>\nA tiger appeared, barring their way,<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;m hungry, &#8221; He said, &#8220;And you are my prey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cows stampeded, but Punyakoti stood fast<br \/>\nAnd then she said, \u201cI know, but let me take a last<br \/>\nLook at my calf, then I&#8217;ll return here to you<br \/>\nThen you can do what you are meant to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tiger, scoffing, laughed at her naivete<br \/>\nHe believed that she would just run away.<br \/>\nShe then asked him to come along to see<br \/>\nThat she could follow through honestly.<\/p>\n<p>She fed her calf, handed him over to the herd<br \/>\nThen followed the tiger, all undeterred.<br \/>\nThe tiger could not bear to kill this truthful creature<br \/>\nSo he decided to turn vegetarian, changed his own nature.<\/p>\n<p>People called him Arbhuta the Amazing and forever more<br \/>\nThis story was told in ballad and verse,<br \/>\nAnd legend and lore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Truthful Cow Punyakoti, the cow, was so truthful, she never lied, She had had a little calf whom she idolized.
