{"id":117743,"date":"2022-06-25T23:26:45","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T03:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=117743"},"modified":"2022-06-25T23:26:45","modified_gmt":"2022-06-26T03:26:45","slug":"prompt-2-promises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/prompt-2-promises\/","title":{"rendered":"Prompt 2 \u201cPromises\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Promises<\/p>\n<p>Was Robert Frost the first one to say,<br \/>\n\u201cBut I have promises to keep and<br \/>\nmiles to go before I sleep\u2026\u201d ?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe so but he certainly wasn\u2019t the last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c Promises to keep\u2026\u201d &#8211; could that phrase\/concept<br \/>\n &#8211; so heavy laden with the potential<br \/>\nto instill guilt and shame<br \/>\nshould said promise not be kept &#8211;<br \/>\npossibly be a product of the modern age?<\/p>\n<p>Might you lay all or most of mankind\u2018s<br \/>\ncurrent conundrums\/stressors at its feet?<br \/>\nI dare say you could, however it would do you<br \/>\nno good because we are stuck<br \/>\nwith our burdens nonetheless. <\/p>\n<p>What we can do though is begin to<br \/>\nslowly unburden ourselves<br \/>\nfrom the yoke of unmet promises<br \/>\nwith one simple act. <\/p>\n<p>Do not make them &#8211; not one &#8211; ever again &#8211;<br \/>\nsimply do not make promises. Do not enter into<br \/>\nthis potential set-up for failure in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Life is too unpredictable and it seems<br \/>\nbetter by far to refuse to make promises<br \/>\nrather than risk burdening ourselves with the<br \/>\npotential of carrying any more<br \/>\nemotional weight than we already have. <\/p>\n<p>This is a lifestyle change that one<br \/>\ncan implement fairly easily.<\/p>\n<p>We couch it in love (the truth by the way);<br \/>\nexplain to our loved ones that rather<br \/>\nthan potentially risk our relationship we have<br \/>\ndecided to eliminate promise making<br \/>\n(to be differentiated from commitment)<br \/>\nfrom our lives. <\/p>\n<p>Try it &#8211; you might be surprised.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Promises Was Robert Frost the first one to say, \u201cBut I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep\u2026\u201d ?
