\nI was Amanda, and he missed the poignance.<\/p>\n
There at the end we sat as in family montage.
\nNo bows, odd applause, though we had done well.<\/p>\n
Just a few in the audience, a small black box
\ntheater in Miami, post 9\/11, before I remembered.<\/p>\n
He sat two feet before my face, staring a loving smile.
\nHis child had done well, that being me, since now I know.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has my nose, poor guy,\u201d I thought to myself,
\nthen looked away. It\u2019s impolite to stare at the audience.<\/p>\n
A party after the show, and he so shyly approached,
\nI, in pure ecstatic bliss, a bit of a drunken mess \u2013 that fast.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m your father,\u201d he said to me.
\n\u201cI believe you,\u201d I laughed. \u201cI knew my mother had an affair!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to be rude!\u201d he said, and walked away.
\nHe was serious. I was just kidding, not believing.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, wait, I must just look like her. I hope you find her.\u201d
\nI implored, attempting to heal the wound I\u2019d made.<\/p>\n
\u201cI already have. It\u2019s you.\u201d He turned, and left.
\nNot one more word did we speak until his death.<\/p>\n
When I finally remembered six months later,
\nhis words saved my life. I\u2019m not crazy!<\/p>\n
I am not the person on my vital statistics!
\nThey lied! They cheated! They tried to paint me crazy,<\/p>\n
but I am not crazy. I am his child.
\nAnd, the power he gave me in so few words,<\/p>\n
just like a father would \u2013 he gave me peace.
