some dudes?\u201d She sipped her wine and arched an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t say that I have, no,\u201d she replied cautiously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, me and my brothers. We\u2019re those dudes.\u201d<\/p>\n
He did sound matter-of-fact, in spite of the ludicrous<\/p>\n
nature of his claim. She smiled to cover a scoff.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cSo then, what do you all do, with that?\u201d she asked,<\/p>\n
sincerely curious, at least to know where this story was going.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe fight crime!\u201d he declared proudly.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Later, many years later, she told him that she stayed,<\/p>\n
not because she believed him, but because she had to know<\/p>\n
