{"id":119690,"date":"2022-06-26T03:28:54","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T07:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=119690"},"modified":"2022-06-28T11:51:44","modified_gmt":"2022-06-28T15:51:44","slug":"this-day-will-not-be-the-death-of-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/this-day-will-not-be-the-death-of-me\/","title":{"rendered":"This Day Will Not Be The Death Of Me (Hour 13)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We smoked better than chimneys- cheeky urban teenagers<\/p>\n<p>roller-coasting our way through life, cussing at life itself<\/p>\n<p>Like we had a spare in our dirty closets.<\/p>\n<p>This night will not be the death of me<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Smoking guns reaping death&#8217;s harvest for our father the devil<\/p>\n<p>smiling and cheering and waiting for us at hell&#8217;s gate<\/p>\n<p>as we gang-warred on bloody pavements.<\/p>\n<p>This night will not be the death of me<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sirens screaming blue murder as sewer rats scrambled for cover<\/p>\n<p>running, ducking, upsetting waste bins as we looked for an exit<\/p>\n<p>in the smoke-filled streets, groping in tear-gassed frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>This night will not be the death of me<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet a bullet found me with my name on it,\u00a0 and dazed, eyes turning pale,<\/p>\n<p>hands dragging me as I smelled the antiseptic interior of an ambulance,<\/p>\n<p>doctors reeling out orders, mom crying, and I soaring towards a Man above in white saying<\/p>\n<p>This night will not be the death of you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I awake with head pounding.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We smoked better than chimneys- cheeky urban teenagers roller-coasting our way through life, cussing at life itself Like we had a spare in our dirty closets.
