{"id":120328,"date":"2022-06-26T04:45:11","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T08:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=120328"},"modified":"2022-06-26T04:45:11","modified_gmt":"2022-06-26T08:45:11","slug":"prompt-20-the-watchtower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/prompt-20-the-watchtower\/","title":{"rendered":"Prompt 20, The  Watchtower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They used to knock on doors in pairs, young believers<br \/>\nselling <em>The Watchtower<\/em>.<br \/>\nI forget which &#8211; oh, no, it was the Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses.<br \/>\nAnd they always wore ties.<\/p>\n<p>We lived in an apartment in Belton and a man<br \/>\nin the unit next door had some<br \/>\nsemblance of religiousness, or, at least<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s what he made clear to my mother when<br \/>\nshe had to ask him for a jump one morning<br \/>\nwhen her car didn&#8217;t start.<\/p>\n<p>I think I was waiting for the Kinks song<br \/>\nto start so I could hit play because I had<br \/>\na cassette recorder, but there was a knock.<br \/>\nMy sister got to the door before me,<br \/>\nbut there was the religious man.<\/p>\n<p>As we both stood there, he admitted<br \/>\nhis sin, that he&#8217;d made up reasons<br \/>\nto be outside to look at us<br \/>\nbefore we caught the bus to school.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked for our forgiveness,<br \/>\nand I guess we nodded our assent to such.<br \/>\nNot much later, we moved and never saw the religious man &#8211;<br \/>\nthat one, anyway &#8211; ever again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They used to knock on doors in pairs, young believers selling The Watchtower.
