in the morning, journal splayed out<\/p>\n
just to the left of the cracked mug<\/p>\n
you hang on to for sentimental reasons<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They say, let the ink of your favorite pen<\/p>\n
skate across the page in an unbroken line\u2014<\/p>\n
capturing each thought that drifts by<\/p>\n
allowing it to have its moment<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This is what I\u2019ve heard, anyway<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I know a few people chipping away at the marble,<\/p>\n
chiseling chapters as they go. Some are strafing potters,<\/p>\n
running their hands from bottom to top,<\/p>\n
smoothing out the wrinkles with each pass\u2014<\/p>\n
at times creating more chaos in their wake<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I am a bystander to their Herculean efforts,<\/p>\n
cheering them on, suggesting sharper synonyms,<\/p>\n
checking in on the antics of the side characters,<\/p>\n
and fishing for a mention in their acknowledgments<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They ask me when I will start my book<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Repeatedly, I raise a hand to wave them off my trail<\/p>\n
of brimming notebooks, coffee-stained prose,<\/p>\n
and half-baked premises. Don\u2019t you see<\/p>\n
the safety cones? You can\u2019t walk there yet!<\/p>\n
It\u2019s riddled with plot holes\u2014the world has yet to be built!<\/p>\n
