{"id":120594,"date":"2022-06-26T05:00:43","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T09:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/?p=120594"},"modified":"2022-06-26T05:00:43","modified_gmt":"2022-06-26T09:00:43","slug":"dogspeak20-in-dog-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/dogspeak20-in-dog-years\/","title":{"rendered":"DogSpeak#20  In Dog Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DogSpeak #20 In Dog Years<\/p>\n<p>Humans like to calculate<br \/>\nour ages in dog years,<br \/>\nseven of ours to one of theirs.<\/p>\n<p>We dogs like to think<br \/>\nour life span on earth is shorter<br \/>\nbecause we have less to learn.<\/p>\n<p>These figures are guesstimates<br \/>\naveraged out for the life cycle<br \/>\nof dog and man.<\/p>\n<p>A good life for a dog is 12 years,<br \/>\nwhich translates to 84<br \/>\nin human years, yes a good life.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the average age of a human<br \/>\nis 80 and brings a sense of worry \u2013<br \/>\nwhat if we outlive our human?<\/p>\n<p>A better thought for a dog is<br \/>\nwhat if we outsmart our human?<br \/>\nWell that\u2019s easy.<\/p>\n<p>Bark at cars, bikes, kids, cats,<br \/>\nbunnies, errant leaves, and your human<br \/>\nwill look and look and see nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Scratch frantic at something under<br \/>\nthe den chair, whine; your human will<br \/>\nleave his dinner unguarded. Too easy.<\/p>\n<p>Give a human 7 years to figure out<br \/>\nhow to make friends with everyone<br \/>\nhe meets. He\u2019ll need more time.<\/p>\n<p>Tell him that he got it backwards,<br \/>\nthat in dogs years, he\u2019s actually<br \/>\nover 400.<\/p>\n<p>Turn in circles 9 times when you go<br \/>\nto bed; when he asks why not 3 times,<br \/>\ntell him you\u2019re an overachiever.<\/p>\n<p>Kiss him, tell him dog saliva<br \/>\nhas magical powers to mend<br \/>\nanything broken, like a heart.<\/p>\n<p>He feeds you at 7:30 every night;<br \/>\nlet him know how proud you are<br \/>\nof him; he\u2019s finally trained.<\/p>\n<p>~ J R Turek<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DogSpeak #20 In Dog Years Humans like to calculate our ages in dog years, seven of ours to one of theirs.
