America: The Fixer-Upper<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is how the world<\/div>\n
found mid-twentieth-century<\/div>\n
my lost America:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Divided by strife,<\/div>\n
disillusioned, bereft–<\/div>\n
not the world’s best hope!<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Reaching for the stars,<\/div>\n
yet mired, unwanted in<\/div>\n
an un-glorious war.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Yet hope did emerge<\/div>\n
from the youths’ idealism<\/div>\n
about what might be.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For the entire world<\/div>\n
saw the possibility<\/div>\n
of freedom from want.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Each mid-century,<\/div>\n
the U.S. remodels itself,<\/div>\n
tossing out the old.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But it truly shouldn’t<\/div>\n
throw out the baby with<\/div>\n
the grungy bath water.<\/div>\n
