while we waxed patriotic,<\/p>\n
swathed in red and in blue,<\/p>\n
star-spangled fervor,<\/p>\n
and voted our leaders<\/p>\n
as if nothing new<\/p>\n
had changed in the background,<\/p>\n
had detoured our tomorrows,<\/p>\n
saw no hint of the deaths<\/p>\n
the vaccines, and the sorrows,<\/p>\n
and there in that lull,<\/p>\n
between explosive bouts,<\/p>\n
