{"id":129021,"date":"2023-09-02T11:31:18","date_gmt":"2023-09-02T15:31:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=129021"},"modified":"2023-09-02T12:09:31","modified_gmt":"2023-09-02T16:09:31","slug":"poem-3-the-way-light-moves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/poem-3-the-way-light-moves\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem 3: The Way Light Moves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I often walk to the forest near my house so I can\u2019t<\/p>\n<p>see the rooms of my house that confine me.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not smart enough to speak Tree, but I want to learn<\/p>\n<p>how the distance is never as great as we think<\/p>\n<p>between where we are and where we want to be.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to listen to the clap of crows winging<\/p>\n<p>away from here, but I want to learn how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Chain link fencing surrounds the new pit<\/p>\n<p>earth movers made of this corner where a 100-foot<\/p>\n<p>water tower will be raised. But they razed<\/p>\n<p>100-year-old trees to make room. The pit<\/p>\n<p>is walled in on all sides by the rocks and dirt<\/p>\n<p>that once filled this space. The berms circle 15 feet high<\/p>\n<p>on all sides. I want to trample to the top of the berms,<\/p>\n<p>feel the dirt give way under my feet. None of this business<\/p>\n<p>is neat. It\u2019s as messy as the art room<\/p>\n<p>of the elementary school a short walk from this pit.<\/p>\n<p>The light is used to watching the children play in the yard.<\/p>\n<p>The light climbs the trees all day, low to high to low again,<\/p>\n<p>but how can it climb when the trees are now gone?<\/p>\n<p>We keep our sorrows to ourselves, just like<\/p>\n<p>the balsamroot and service berries keep<\/p>\n<p>secrets they won&#8217;t speak. \u00a0I wish I could speak to them all,<\/p>\n<p>tell them I\u2019m sorry for this pit that wrecked their home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I often walk to the forest near my house so I can\u2019t see the rooms of my house that confine me.
