He said<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>that Mrs. Montgomery had told<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>him of her suspicious and<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>when he asked his<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>wife, she admitted that Montgomery<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>had made some advances, but<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>that<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>she had done<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>nothing wrong and he intended going to the <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Montgomery home to have an understanding, <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>on the <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>night of the <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>trouble, but did not.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>He said he<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>visited the <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>hospital in Detroit and found<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Montgomery there. The latter asked<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Woods not to tell his<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>relatives where he was.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/><br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Every member of the Montgomery family<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>is very<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>reticent in discussing the case<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>and they all absolutely refuse to say anything<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>that might<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>incriminate the wife of<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Fred Montgomery. They profess<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>to be in ignorance of her present <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>whereabouts.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/><br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Mrs. Watkins, who lives next<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>door to Montgomery home,<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>informed detectives that suspected <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>woman told her she jabbed<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>him with a<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>hat pin and that it<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>broke off.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/><br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>None of the witnesses felt<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>disposed to give Mrs. Montgomery<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>undue blame, and<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>from testimony it was clearly<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>shown that Montgomery was quarreling with<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>his wife and that he<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>administered<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>a severe whipping, as she was bruised about<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>the face and<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>body after her husband had left<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>the house.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/><br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>Mrs. William Watkins was the star<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>witness of the <br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>evening and she told her story<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>in a placid, self-satisfied way that greatly<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>impressed every person<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>in the town hall. She<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>said that on the night of the<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>row, she heard a woman's screams and<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>going to the door of her own home she<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>discovered the dead<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>man and his wife scuffling on the lawn.<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>She<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>called and asked what<br data-rich-text-line-break=\"true\" \/>they were doing.
