Heading out to perform today\u2019s ceremony
\nI am told \u2018hope it goes without a hitch\u2019
\nwith a wink akin to telling an actor
\n\u2018break a leg\u2019 <\/p>\n
Though hitching up people is what I do
\nstating that sounds cowboyish
\nthere are metaphors there
\nto corral <\/p>\n
I find great joy in certifying my couples\u2019
\ncommitments to forever \u2013 however
\nlong that may be \u2013 my
\ntrack record, solid<\/p>\n
Eschewing most conventions is my
\nstock in trade, pushing more
\nenvelopes than small town
\npostal clerk<\/p>\n
I have guided couples in tying knots with
\nsatin braids, boat mooring rope;
\npoured sand in jars, dirt
\ninto buckets<\/p>\n
If the metaphor fits, we can wear it – all
\nin the name of unity – if it makes a
\nvisual point we only need
\nvows, amen <\/p>\n
\u201cYou may kiss!\u201d My ending proclamation
\nleaves out person-to-person
\nspecificity, as I always trust
\nmy audience<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve never stated \u2018we are gathered here\u2019
\nnot once invited objections
\nnor asked \u2018who gives this . . . \u2018
\nsave for one<\/p>\n
bride honoring her culturally-bound father
\nand while I cringed, she was
\nsatisfied, all there knew
\nhe was too<\/p>\n
So today I will head out noting with irony
\nnot having a hitch in proceedings
\nwhile getting whomever
\njoyfully hitched<\/p>\n
