{"id":131116,"date":"2023-09-02T14:40:32","date_gmt":"2023-09-02T18:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=131116"},"modified":"2023-09-02T14:40:32","modified_gmt":"2023-09-02T18:40:32","slug":"hour-six-cornfield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/hour-six-cornfield\/","title":{"rendered":"Hour six &#8211; cornfield"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Washing the dishes<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I allow the water to run too long<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and think about the fertile crescent drying,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">saltwater remains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think of China, flooding<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">overflowing rafts of the desperate floating through the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Where will they go?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think about Scientists,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">trying to reinvent photosynthesis,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">arrogant bastards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think of the endless garbage they try to sell us at the grocery store,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">the catastrophic repercussions catching up with us as we run towards greed, our hands ready.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think of the field of corn.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t believe it<\/p>\n<p>when she told me they used Roundup to kill everything.<\/p>\n<p>He kept asking me, &#8220;Did you see the corn?&#8221; Like a field of aliens<\/p>\n<p>all sprouting up in a row, tiny little creatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think of the artist and activist Ai Weiwei,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">condemning power through a silent gesture of anger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Like him, I give the finger every time I walk the field, to my neighbor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No red clover,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No patches of wildflowers,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No red-winged blackbirds,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No laps of solace,<\/p>\n<p>No late nights surrounded by wild eyes and falling stars,<\/p>\n<p>No sanctuary<\/p>\n<p>A whole field of corn<\/p>\n<p>for your tax-free land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washing the dishes I allow the water to run too long and think about the fertile crescent drying, saltwater remains.
