{"id":132023,"date":"2023-09-02T14:47:29","date_gmt":"2023-09-02T18:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=132023"},"modified":"2023-09-02T14:47:29","modified_gmt":"2023-09-02T18:47:29","slug":"poem-6-crows-at-sundown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/poem-6-crows-at-sundown\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem 6:  Crows at Sundown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I look out the kitchen window at the slanting light<\/p>\n<p>that gilds all the shrubs and trees in the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Tangerine clouds drift like schooners in the indigo sky.<\/p>\n<p>A sudden clamorous cawing of crows calls me<\/p>\n<p>to go outside where my like-minded neighbors<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>join me at the fence. We look up at a long row of black birds<\/p>\n<p>strung close together on a telephone wire.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s not a single crumpled feather among them. I imagine<\/p>\n<p>they can see themselves in the smooth sheen of their pals, their<\/p>\n<p>beaks filled with dark song. One of them lets loose a singular <em>caw!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>like some horny housewife who wants to burn the restaurant<\/p>\n<p>down because her husband goes there every day, because<\/p>\n<p>he sleeps after tv each night so he can wake up all fresh<\/p>\n<p>when he leaves again at dawn. A woman can be<\/p>\n<p>jealous of bricks and ovens and crows who seldom<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>talk about restaurants or buildings because\u00a0they never go inside.<\/p>\n<p>My neighbors and I can tell the crows\u00a0enjoy a strong wire<\/p>\n<p>like this one they can safely perch on, where they won&#8217;t get<\/p>\n<p>torched the second they touch down, despite the clamor<\/p>\n<p>of voices that pass through their coiled claws.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I look out the kitchen window at the slanting light that gilds all the shrubs and trees in the yard.
