The sunlight is captured, perhaps long ago<\/span><\/p>\n

trapped in cells of hardwood<\/span><\/p>\n

harvested and deconstructed<\/span><\/p>\n

Only to end up a sheet of ads for groceries that I did not read<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I twist the newspaper in my hands curling it into a thin snake\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

that would be easily camouflaged at a stop & shop\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

then lay it inside the ring\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

casually dropping it amongst its raw kindling brethren<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a serpent of smoke rises into the world\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the dye coloring it so much darker than<\/span><\/p>\n

the cumulonimbus that shields us\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

from the sunlight it begs to be a part of again<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

as the flames die down\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the embers flash through its skeletal remains\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

echoing the lightning that splits the shield briefly<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

finally a piece is light enough, still burning at the edges<\/span><\/p>\n

the current of heat thrusts it back towards the storm<\/span><\/p>\n

Briefly it shines against the cloud in sky before disappearing\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back to the sky where it once belonged\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
