{"id":133707,"date":"2023-09-02T16:45:46","date_gmt":"2023-09-02T20:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=133707"},"modified":"2023-09-02T16:45:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-02T20:45:46","slug":"a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words\/","title":{"rendered":"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Faded photographs of album covers flit across the television screen<br \/>\nAs songs from my past are harmonized by those I once crooned along with.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s The Hollies, singing about my brother not being heavy<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019m there, remembering Billy.<\/p>\n<p>Moments ago it was The Marmalade, singing \u201cReflections of My Mind\u201d<br \/>\nAs I recalled how I used to think the chorus said \u201cTake me back to my Momma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remember Elton John\u2019s one about diamonds?<br \/>\nYeah, I thought he sang \u201cPut me in the sky with God\u201d as I\u2019d twirl \u2019round and around in the yard.<\/p>\n<p>America sang about needing someone like the flowers needed the rain<br \/>\nAnd I remembered one night playing Solitaire and murmuring \u201cI need you\u201d to my unrequited love.<\/p>\n<p>When a few moments ago Elvis sang about his suspicious mind,<br \/>\nI remembered a deejay once saying how he loved that song because it allowed him to take an extra long bathroom break when another chorus faded in to rile up the lovers again.<\/p>\n<p>Now Neil Diamond is singing \u201cPlay Me.\u201d<br \/>\nI took that one to heart&#8211;but got played instead.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s move on.<\/p>\n<p>Oh great: more Elvis, singing about that rain in Kentucky.<br \/>\nHow I used to yearn for someone to seek me out like that.<\/p>\n<p>Ahh, there\u2019s Carole King with songs from her Tapestry album<br \/>\nFor some reason that one makes me think about life as a kid in California.<\/p>\n<p>Each time I hear \u201cThe Sounds of Silence\u201d I remember the melancholy.<br \/>\nNo matter what is going on, I must stop what I am doing and pay due homage to that classic.<\/p>\n<p>The nearly maniacal laughter in The Guess Who\u2019s song makes me question my own madness.<br \/>\nAre you laughing at me now?<\/p>\n<p>Gordon, if you could read my mind, could you make sense of this?<br \/>\nThat was another favorite that takes me back to my life as a young one without a clue.<\/p>\n<p>And now we\u2019re to Nilsson and his heartbreaking ditty about not being able to live if living is without you.<br \/>\nThat one makes me think about you. You know who you are.<\/p>\n<p>All of these songs played since the start of this poem. Ironic, since they probably started off as poetry themselves. Songs worth a thousand words but narrowed down to a few couplings.<\/p>\n<p>A few lines that encompass my life&#8211;or at least a large part of it.
