An Elegy for the Roadkill:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Has anyone ever thanked the carcasses\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For letting us be the ones to survive the wreck\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

for becoming rigor mortis sculptures\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to decorate the guardrails\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

keeping the crosses company\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and feeding the flowers with their decomposition\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so we can all see the reminders\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and slow down\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There was a girl in high school once-\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and a deer took the hit\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

got to be the excuse we all clinged to\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

instead of the truth\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

which is that sometimes we just want to drive away from ourselves\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and finally meet the horizon\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yesterday,<\/span><\/p>\n

I slammed the brakes so a turkey could cross\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and he took his damn time too\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d just gotten back up to speed\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When 2 cop cars passed me\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so fast that I barely heard the next 2 coming\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so fast that I had already parked on the shoulder\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

had already thanked god for no ticket\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

had already felt the guilt that always follows that relief\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

because they are on their way to a different kind of victim\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

10 miles later\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

there was a motorbike on a flatbed\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

with no rider\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That night, I learned what the asphalt of your driveway tastes like\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

cause I kissed the ground when I got there<\/span><\/p>\n

that night\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

we gave all our thanks\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to a turkey\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who had made the world slow<\/span><\/p>\n

so I could stay in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
