Mail order caterpillar specks arrive<\/p>\n

to place in the netted butterfly chamber<\/p>\n
we watch as time transforms specks of black pepper
\nto spring green caterpillars about a quarter inch long<\/p>\n
there\u2019s four of them<\/p>\n
clinging to the netting<\/p>\n
feasting on a sugar saturated paper towel<\/p>\n
then one morning we see four cocoons<\/p>\n
curiosity abounds<\/p>\n
eager impatient hands wanting to<\/p>\n
unravel the silken cotton pods<\/p>\n
to \u201chelp\u201d the butterflies transformation<\/p>\n
to speed nature along<\/p>\n
curious eyes and daily guesses<\/p>\n
at what type of butterfly\u2019s will emerge<\/p>\n
we hope it\u2019s the Monarchs<\/p>\n
one morning we see wings clinging to the netting<\/p>\n
they have hatched!<\/p>\n
\u201ccan we keep them?<\/p>\n
we could feed them sugar cubes since they\u2019re bigger\u201d<\/p>\n
no sweetie, I\u2019m afraid not<\/p>\n
\u201dmaybe they will stay in the yard<\/p>\n
and we can keep them as pets<\/p>\n
and feed them sugar cubes!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cwell, let\u2019s see how long they stay around<\/p>\n
maybe they will stay in the garden\u201d<\/p>\n
zips open the butterfly netting<\/p>\n
out darts black and yellow butterflies<\/p>\n
not the Monarchs nonetheless<\/p>\n
the air current swoops them<\/p>\n
away to never give a chance<\/p>\n
to dwell in the gardens<\/p>\n
all those weeks<\/p>\n
all that time to nurture<\/p>\n
and bring along life<\/p>\n
secretly wanting to keep them forever<\/p>\n
now released with joy to<\/p>\n
share with the World<\/p>\n
