Blackberry Brandy<\/p>\n
her name is Brandelyn, we all call her Brandi but
\nhe calls her Blackberry Brandy, a long cool name
\nfor the love of his life whose hair shines like a smooth
\nsip of it when they sit on the beach beneath a full moon,
\ntide rising to rush the shore<\/p>\n
but they\u2019re never in a rush<\/p>\n
they sit back on the blanket she kept on the backseat
\nfor when she took Ruffles for a ride, his canine head
\nflying out the window in pure joy, his chuffs when they
\nheaded home too soon for him<\/p>\n
but Ruffles was gone more than a month<\/p>\n
she\u2019s sad now, he leans into her, nuzzles her slender neck
\nfurry with white dog hair, kisses her cheek and spits fur while
\nshe laughs, a soft melodic sound that staunches his cough and
\nmakes him smile<\/p>\n
how he\u2019s missed that laugh these past weeks<\/p>\n
forty years together, she still makes his heart do a double beat
\nhis Brandy, sweet as blackberries off the vine, his soul mate,
\nhis soul aching for the void left between them… Ruffles loved
\nhim but loved her more<\/p>\n
he hurts for her hurting<\/p>\n
tomorrow, their anniversary, he\u2019s taking a risk, a longshot gulp
\nof hope he prays will be the answer, will bring her back from
\nwherever she goes when her shine is dimmed, the abyss where
\nhe tries<\/p>\n
but he can\u2019t reach her<\/p>\n
she will be the answer to his prayers, she who needs a name,
\nwho wears a purple collar, she who waits at the neighbor\u2019s
\nhouse until morning, her shiny black fur almost the color
\nof blackberries, and maybe, that will be her name but
\nhe\u2019s hoping it will be Angel<\/p>\n
delivering puppy kisses to bring joy back to his love<\/p>\n
